Diamond clarity might be the most misunderstood of the 4 Cs.
People see "VS1" on a certification and panic. "Is that good? Should I upgrade to VVS1? Will people notice?"
Here's what you actually need to know.
What Clarity Actually Measures
Clarity measures how many "inclusions" a diamond has. Inclusions are tiny bits of minerals, fractures, or other imperfections inside the diamond.
Almost all diamonds have some inclusions—they're natural. The question is: how many, how visible, and where?
The Clarity Grading Scale
FL (Flawless): Zero inclusions, even under magnification. Extremely rare. Extremely expensive. Most people will never see one.
IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Still rare. Still expensive.
VVS1 & VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Tiny inclusions visible only under magnification. Not visible to the naked eye. Premium price, but no visible benefit.
VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Tiny inclusions visible only under magnification. Not visible to the naked eye. Better value than VVS.
SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions visible under magnification. Occasionally visible to the naked eye (especially in SI2). Still beautiful diamonds. Noticeably cheaper.
I1, I2, I3 (Included): Visible inclusions. Noticeably cloudy or dark. Not recommended.
The Real Talk: What Can You Actually See?
Here's the secret: unless you have magnification, you can't see any inclusions in a VS1 or VVS1 diamond. Period.
Your naked eye, looking at a diamond at normal distance, cannot detect the difference between a VS1 and a VVS1. Both look identical.
The price difference? 15-25%. The visible difference? Zero.
Where Clarity Actually Matters
If your diamond has visible inclusions (SI2 and below in many cases), you'll actually see them. The diamond might look slightly cloudy or have a visible "spot."
That's the only clarity level that genuinely affects what you see when you wear the ring.
The Strategic Recommendation
For 99% of buyers: aim for VS1 or SI1. Avoid VVS—you're paying for grades you can't see. Avoid SI2 unless you've personally examined that specific diamond and like what you see.
This advice assumes you're buying from a reputable source with good diamond selection (not from the discount bin at a mall jewelry store).

All VS1 diamonds are not created equal. A VS1 with inclusions clustered in one area might look better than a VS1 with inclusions scattered throughout.
